the green

A town's central public lawn, and the usual venue for a New England outdoor fair.

The green, or common, is the open public ground at the center of a traditional New England town, historically shared grazing and now civic space. Craft fairs, concerts and parades are staged on it, which means the event is fully outdoors with no rain building to retreat into. Parking is typically street parking around the green rather than a dedicated lot.

Also known as: town common, the common.
